The intention of the lqlab is to promote the societal shift towards a culture of sustainability through research, education, design, innovation and cooperation. Its constant aim is to improve the quality of life for people, in material terms but even more so in non-material terms. It does so by engaging in exchange, learning and teaching with manifold institutions, universities, and agencies in different countries and from different disciplines. The lqlab attempts to be an interdisciplinary, intercultural and interpersonal platform, all the way keeping in mind the advantages and disadvantages of globalization and the issues of local and place-specific aspects and relationships.
The lqlab hosts an array of courses, forums, summer schools and workshops. The lqlab serves primarily as the local training and consulting location for Swiss education programs offered by the Berne University of Applied Sciences. The labs’s organisational framework is broadly conceived. It allows for studies in the form of structured courses, as well as independent, individual studies.
We invite you to browse the courses below and welcome your individual proposals.
The lqlab is an international coaching and consulting project of Bern University of Applied Sciences, in China hosted and managed by SIM International Management.
The lqlab team is a cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary group of architects, designers and educators who have learned, taught, practiced and researched the topics of architecture, sustainability and life quality.
Prof. Peter Boelsterli
Eco-architectural expression implies integrating scientific empiric reflection on buildingperformance, regional cultural diversity, reciprocal cross-culturalunderstanding with proficient advanced planning technologies and pertinentemerging building material. In China, Peter Boelsterli's conceptual methodologyfocuses primarily on a thorough analysis of the underlying distinctiveconditions: natural, historical, geo-ecological, and cultural singularities toprovide the empirical frame for a visually powerful and sustainably persuasivedesign model. The aspiration is to contribute to a debate that valuesindividual cultural aspects while adapting to the specific blueprint of thelocale and its prospect. Long term professional collaboration with local, regional and hierarchical Chinese partners is seen as crucial.

Prof. Pius Leuba
The required shift in our perception of values in built environments is unprecedented and we might not even understand its scale, nature and significance yet. It will take a joint, interdisciplinary and concerted effort from all stakeholders involved in the creation, operation and use of built environments. By keeping the overall goal in mind and doing one step at a time we can bring about a culture of sustainable environments.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
Margaret Mead
