On Saturday April 24th, the lqlab was buzzing with design professionals who filled our classroom for a day of friendly exchanges on the topic of sustainability. The event kicked off with introductions by our program directors Professor Peter Boelsterli and Professor Pius Leuba. Professor Xiao of South China University of Technology initiated the discussions by sharing his research on design in Guangdong. By studying the performance of passive strategies in traditional southern building types, Professor Xiao showed how old principles might be adapted in a contemporary context. Dr. Tian of Keller Technologies then discussed a radically different problem for architecture in northern climate - heat loss. In the cold, dry climate of northern China, a combination of radiant flooring, displacement ventilation and insulation dramatically improve indoor comfort and energy saving. The MAS masters students also engaged in friendly competition. There were seven groups, each given five minutes to present their sustainable design solutions. The projects tackled issues of preservation and restoration, landscape design, small-scale residential and high-density residences. Group 3 consisting of Fan Xihong, Wang Jiamin and Wu Zongjian whose use of passive shading, local vegetation, energy efficient light fixtures and grey water systems produced the winning project. The afternoon focused on the practical application of materials, technologies in sustainable buildings. Dr. Zhang, Mr. Wong and Mr. Li of Bayer MaterialScience introduced the flexibility and technical advantages of polyurethane insulation and polycarbonate materials. Professor Hui of Hong Kong University introduced new power generation technology such as a micro-wind turbine. Mr. Zhou of Vanke Real Estate Development finished the event with a speech on sustainable real estate. In Shenzhen alone, numerous projects, including the Vanke Center are meeting standards of sustainability such as LEED.

 

The very first lqlab event ended on a big positive note. Many thanks for the guest lecturers from South China University of Technology, Hong Kong University, Keller Technology, Bayer MaterialScience and Vanke and everyone who attended. The lqlab would also like to thank all of the MAS students for their hard work proposing new sustainable design solution out of their working projects.

 

Our cross-disciplinary group of designers, technologists, researchers and developers helped shed light on the challenges coming from their respective fields. We are busy brainstorming and preparing for the next lqlab public event. We hope to see everyone there.

Already in 2008, a study by McGraw-Hill showed that within 5 years (2013!) a significant part of all design projects would have ‘sustainability' as their primary objective, simply because the clients demand it. The question is, whether we designers will be able to produce truly sustainable designs and meet a fast-evolving society's demands. It is crucial that we render ourselves fit in environmental, social and technological building issues, because it is obvious that the professionals who will be up to date and able to deliver sustainable designs will enjoy a significant advantage in our competitive markets.

 

In order to bring awareness to this issue, to share experience and knowledge and to promote sustainable design in China and Shenzhen, the Life Quality Laboratory is holding the ‘Building Green China: Exploring ways that help designers create sustainable built environments' event on Saturday, April 24, 2010. Researchers, engineers, developers, design professionals, current students of sustainable design, educators, manufacturers and many more will participate to find out how design can improve the sustainability of built environment and the life quality of people in our own place.

 

麦格劳-希尔在2008年的一项调查研究中已经指出在未来的五年内(也就是至2013年),所有设计项目的重要部分将会把"可持续性"作为项目的主要目标之一。原因也很简单,因为业主客户的需求。但问题是,我们设计师是否有能力真的进行可持续设计并且满足快速发展的社会需求。我们使自己适应于环境、社会与科技建筑三个主题是一种无法停止的循环,因为显而易见能够不断进取并且掌握可持续设计的职业设计师将会在竞争激烈的市场中占有至关重要的优势。

 

为了使更多人关注这方面的话题,分享实践的经验与知识并且改善中国与深圳的可持续设计,生态研习所将会在20101年四月二十四号星期六举办"中国绿色建筑:探索帮助设计师创造可持续的人造环境的方式"的活动。研究人员、工程师、发展决策者、职业设计师、可持续设计本届学员、教育工作者、制造商以及许多愿意参加并且寻找出设计将如何改善人造环境的可持续性与当地人群的生活品质。
